Information for Candidates

Nominating as a candidate for 2018 Council elections

Most people who are on the council voters roll can stand for election. The Electoral Commission SA provides further detail on nomination eligibility.

Becoming a Councillor is one of the most direct ways that you can influence decisions that affect the quality of life in your local area.

If you are interested in representing the people of your community on council, the Local Government Association (SA) provides a range of resources to help you understand the role and responsibilities of being a Councillor. Potential candidates can access that information here.

The LGA and some local councils will also run information seminars for candidates during July and August 2018. Details will be available on the LGA website.

Nomination process

Nominations for the 2018 local government elections open Tuesday 4 September 2018, and close Tuesday 18 September 2018 at 12 noon. During this time, prospective candidates must complete and lodge a nomination form which will be available from Council offices and other advertised locations.

As part of their nomination, candidates will also be asked to lodge a 150-word candidate profile and a ‘head shoulders’ photograph which will be published on a candidates’ website.

Further 2018 candidate resources and information about the nomination process will be available in August 2018.
