About OPAL

WOULDN’T IT BE GREAT TO...

  • Give your children the best chance to be healthy?
  • Live in a community where there are lots of ways to enjoy being active?
  • Discover safe scenic paths to cycle or walk to work and school?
  • Develop skills for preparing delicious meals that are good for you and your family?
  • Understand food labels so you can plan healthy meals for your family?
  • Feel healthier and have more energy to do the things you enjoy?

The Coorong District Council, together with the South Australian and Australian Government think that these are great ideas too.
That’s why they have started OPAL in your community.
OPAL is a program that’s about everyone in your community working together to create all kinds of ways to enjoy eating well and to have fun being active.

LOTS OF GOOD REASONS FOR OPAL

A community-based healthy lifestyle program like OPAL is run in France and has had great results.
Children and adults who are active and enjoy healthy eating are more likely to live a healthy life. That means you and your children may have:

  • More energy.
  • More confidence.
  • Better sleep.
  • Better health – less risk of diabetes, heart disease, high blood cholesterol, high blood pressure and some cancers.
  • Stronger bones and healthier joints.

Being active and eating well are also great ways to relax and enjoy being with your family and friends.
As well as keeping you and your family well, these healthy lifestyle choices can make your whole community a more enjoyable place to live – where people have fewer long-term health problems.

HOW WILL OPAL WORK?

OPAL will involve people and organisations working together across the whole community.
Your community has an OPAL Manager and OPAL Project Support Officer based within the council area. They will work with individuals (like you) and with a range of community groups – including schools, health services, council and private businesses.
Local committees with people from all walks of life will work together to find out what your community needs to help children and adults to be more active and make healthy eating choices.
Sometimes that might mean making better use of existing programs. It could also mean getting everyone’s heads together to develop new programs.
The result will be a community where it is easier for you and your family to live a healthy life.

WHAT WILL YOUR OPAL COMMUNITY LOOK LIKE?

Because OPAL will be shaped by your community and its needs, the program will look different in each area.
OPAL will work with communities to support and introduce a range of programs like:

  • Community gardens where you can grow and share your own vegies and fruit.
  • Supermarkets that help you to make healthier food choices.
  • Good quality drinking water in public places.
  • Family day care, schools and work places that promote healthy eating and physical activity programs.
  • Easy-to-use maps to find safe ways to walk or cycle to work and school.
  • Sporting clubs that welcome beginners and parents.
  • Family fun days to discover safe cycling paths in your local area.
