This fact sheet covers the basic considerations and steps involved in constructing a lined catchment. Maintaining a reliable and sustainable farm water supply is a major concern for livestock producers today. A lined catchment is a poly lined catchment area that runs  into a poly lined dam. A lined catchment will capture water in any rainfall or dew event, where as an earthen dam needs the soil profile to be fully wetted up for water to run off the catchment and into the dam.

CASE STUDIES: Sheeted water catchments on the Eyre Peninsula

This link takes you to four You Tube case study videos about building sheeted water catchments on the Eyre Peninsula.

These practical case studies provide information on; - site preparation, - project costs, - materials used, - and the motivation to implement these projects. These practical videos are well worth watching, and provide project information that is readily transferable to our region.

 Sheeted water catchments on the Eyre Peninsula

CASE STUDY:    Mark & Andrea Hannemann - Cleve Hills, Eyre Peninsula

Commodities: wheat, barley, canola, peas, vetch & fat lambs.

Farming area: 1700 hectares. Annual rainfall: 400 –425mm.

Historically we relied on 40 dams on the property as we have no mains water connection. During the drought we were carting water from the local standpipe in Cleve (30km round trip). We have now developed a water harvesting scheme which will hopefully satisfy our farm water needs. We selected a site which is the highest point on our farm & had some major earthworks done to prepare the 80 x 40m catchment area. The catchment area gravitates to a 3m deep holding dam with is 30 x 30m. Both catchment and dam are lined with 1mm high density polyethylene plastic. The dam is covered with an evaporative cover, which minimizes evaporation by 100%. The dam 98% efficient at catching water. For every mm of rain, we collect 1L of water/square metre. Even with heavy dew, we collect water. On our average 400mm rainfall/year, we should collect 1.6 million litres of water, which is enough to run our property for a year.
