2021 Coorong Australia Day Awards Now Open
Nominations are now open for the 2021 Australia Day Awards within the Coorong Council district. It’s time to celebrate and recognise our home-grown heroes!
In 2020 Australia Day events were held in the towns of Tintinara, Meningie, and Tailem Bend, where deserving Coorong recipients were celebrated at each event. 2021 Coorong district nominations are now welcome from all areas across the district.
Australia Day Award nomination categories include Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Community Event of the Year, and Community Project of the Year.
Individuals need only be nominated once to be considered for an award, and the number of nominations received per nominee bears no weight in their selection.
Selection criteria includes:
Citizen and Young Citizen of the Year: significant contribution to the community, an inspirational role model and the scope or impact of their contribution to the Coorong district;
Community Event of the Year: the quality of the event, scope of the impact of the event on the Coorong district, the event’s contribution to the community;
Community Project of the Year: quality of the project, scope of the impact the project has on the Coorong district, the project’s contribution to the community.
It has been some time since a Young Citizen of the Year has been celebrated in the Coorong; this year Council is encouraging residents to nominate their outstanding young achievers and share the achievements of these special individuals.
In 2020 Maxine Kiddie from Tailem Bend, Naomi Stidiford from Tintinara, and Meningie’s Garry Hera-Singh were all awarded Citizen of the Year for their long-standing commitment to their respective communities for community projects and volunteering, environmental sustainability, and emergency service volunteering.
The much-loved Tailem Bend Christmas Parade and Cabaret was also recognised as Community Event of the Year in 2020.
If you know of a community group or person who should have their outstanding achievements celebrated please consider nominating them for the 2021 Australia Day Awards.
Nomination forms are available from any Council office or can be downloaded from Coorong District Council’s website: www.coorong.sa.gov.au/australiaday.
Nominations close at 5:00pm on Friday 4 December 2020.
