Coorong to Celebrate NAIDOC Week 2020
Local communities across the Coorong District Council are invited to get involved in the 2020 NAIDOC week celebrations being held from 8-15 November.
Each year NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC Week is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life.
Coorong District Council will be hosting three (3) events across the district that will include flag raising ceremonies, performances of cultural song and dance and a community barbecue. Local schools have been invited to participate by attending an event, and junior primary and local kindergartens will take part in colouring-in competitions.
“NAIDOC Week is a great opportunity for community members to engage in indigenous culture and participate in a range of activities, in support of our local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities,” says Coorong District Council Mayor Paul Simmons.
In what will be a first, Coorong District Council will be conducting a flag raising ceremony in Tintinara and inviting the community and local school to attend and pay tribute to the region’s indigenous history.
Tailem Bend and Meningie will also be hosting flag raising ceremonies, with special activities and a community barbecue to be featured at Meningie this year. Cultural dance troupe Rritjarukar (the Willy Wagtails) will be performing on the foreshore at the Meningie Lions Jubilee Park, followed by activities provided by Moorundi Health Services.
Generous community support and sponsorship received from Bank SA, Moorundi Health Services, the Riverland Mallee Coorong Local Health Network, Raukkan Community Council and the National Indigenous Australians Agency have made these events possible.
