2022 NAIDOC Week to be Celebrated Across the Coorong

Media Release

Update - 28 June 2022

Due to an increase in COVID cases currently being experienced in the organisation, Coorong District Council has made the difficult decision to postpone the planned NAIDOC Week festivities to be held this Thursday, 30th June at the Tintinara War Memorial Hall.

This decision has been made in the interest of the health and safety of event participants, who may include the more vulnerable members of our community. While many social distancing restrictions have now been lifted, we still seriously consider the risk attached to any public event planned by Council, as the health and wellbeing of our community is considered the highest priority.

At this stage the events planned at Meningie (Thursday 7th July) and Tailem Bend (Friday 8th July) will go ahead, however this may also be subject to change.

We apologise to our community for this last-minute change of plans; we hope to celebrate NAIDOC Week in Tintinara later in the year. Revised event details will be circulated once confirmed.

Media Release - 27 June 2022

Local communities across the Coorong District Council are invited to participate in the 2022 NAIDOC Week celebrations being held from 3 July – 10 July.

Each year NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC Week is celebrated not only by First Nations people, but by Australians from all walks of life.

“NAIDOC Week is a great opportunity for our community to engage in First Nations culture and participate in a range of activities that celebrate and support our local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities,” says Coorong District Council Mayor Paul Simmons.

The NAIDOC 2022 theme – Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! – calls for all Australians to continue to work towards and support systemic change, in pursuit of securing institutional, structural, collaborative and cooperative reforms.

NAIDOC 2022 invites the nation to embrace First Nations’ cultural knowledge and understanding of Country as part of Australia's national heritage and equally respect the culture and values of Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islanders, as they do the cultures and values of all Australians.

This year Coorong District Council will be hosting three events across the district, which will include a flag raising ceremony, performances of cultural song and dance, along with community barbecues and a morning tea.
