Vote

Voting in the local council elections is about voting for who will work to make key decisions that will impact your local community.

Your vote must be received before 5:00pm on Thursday, 10 November 2022.

How to vote?

Voting is easy and simple.

All voting in council elections is by post (postal ballot).

You do not need to go anywhere to cast your vote. Instead, you simply post your completed ballot papers. This makes it easy and convenient for anyone to vote.

Alternatively, you can return your ballot papers to Council's principal office (Coorong Civic Centre, 95-101 Railway Terrace, Tailem Bend).

Please note that ballot boxes are not available at the Meningie and Tintinara offices this year - please post your ballot papers or return them to the ballot box at the Coorong Civic Centre, Tailem Bend.

Receive your ballot pack

If you have enrolled to vote, you will receive a ballot pack (also known as a voting pack) in your mail when the voting period opens.

The ballot pack will contain:

  • A ballot paper for each election being contested in the council area for which you are entitled to vote (for example - mayor, and area councillors)
  • Information on your area’s candidates standing for election
  • A ballot paper envelope to be signed
  • A reply-paid envelope
  • Instructions on how to vote (postal voting guide).

You will only receive a ballot pack if you enrolled to vote on the council’s voters roll or are on the state (House of Assembly) electoral roll.

Ballot packs will be mailed out between 14 to 20 October 2022.

Get to know your candidates

The ballot pack you receive will contain information about each of the candidates standing for the council elections. If you choose to, you can also get in touch with the candidates and discuss their views and vision for the area and why they want to be elected.

You can also learn more about each candidate on the Electoral Commission SA website.

Removal of wards at November 2022 Council Elections

During 2021, Coorong District Council undertook a representation review which considered the composition of the Council, including whether it was appropriate to have wards. Through several rounds of community engagement, it was decided that wards would be removed.

At the next local government elections (November 2022) electors in the Coorong District Council will no longer elect Councillors for their own Ward. The following changes will instead take effect:

  • The Council area shall not be divided into wards (i.e. wards shall be abolished)
  • The elected body of Council shall be made up of the Mayor and seven (7) Area Councillors, all of whom shall represent the entire Council area and shall be elected by the community at council-wide elections
  • The principal member of Council shall be a Mayor elected by the community
