Coonalpyn Holiday Swim Program

The five-day holiday swim program is run by Royal Life Saving South Australia and generally takes place in the first week of January in Coonalpyn.

Holiday Swim is a Royal Life Saving Society South Australia initiative bringing affordable and educational swimming and water safety lessons to pools and inland waterway locations across Metro and Regional SA since the 1950’s. The aim of the program is to teach children critical life saving skills and basic swimming skills, to equip them with the knowledge to stay safe in, on and around the water.

The aim of keeping the program affordable, is to reach families and communities that might otherwise miss out on the opportunity to participate in swimming lessons, and as we approach the busy Summer months now is the time to equip them with the knowledge to save a life.

DETAILS INCLUDE:

  • Little Wonders Level W2 - W4 and Level 1 are 30 minutes
  • Swim and Survive Level 2 - 11 and Bronze Star lessons are 45 minutes
Bronze Medallion and Bronze Cross lessons are 1 hour

Pool Upgrade Project

Coorong District Council was successful in receiving $190,000 through the Federal Government's Local Roads & Community Infrastructure Program to upgrade the pool building and amenities. Together with a $145,000 Council contribution, the life project cost is $335,000. Pool building and amenities upgrades commenced in September 2021 and were completed at the beginning of December 2021.

The existing facilities were completely demolished and new underfloor plumbing was laid to suit a change in building configuration. The amenities have been upgraded to have door access, and total building fit-out features include:

  • Private shower cubicles with change room space
  • Hot water to the showers
  • Non-slip tiled floors within amenities
  • Disability compliant toilet and shower in both the male and female amenities
  • Canteen extension
  • Cabinetry upgrade within the canteen

The pool building and amenities upgrade follows recent upgrades to the pool itself, achieved with $335,000 received through the Federal Government's Drought Communities Extension Programme. Completed in December 2020, the project included renovation of the 25 metre swimming pool and wading pool, fencing, paving and additional storage.

Improvements to the Coonalpyn & District Soldiers Memorial Swimming Pool have created a stand-out community facility which will be a drawcard for visitors to Coonalpyn, and a positive asset for the community to enjoy. Council looks forward to the community making the most of the new and improved pool facility over the warmer months.
