Veldt Grass Resource Page
Veldt Grass pastures are a readily recognisable part of the Coorong Tatiara landscape. This pasture is well suited to our rainfall, climate and sandy soils. Over many years Veldt Grass pastures have stablilised our sandy soils and provided a hardy feed base to grazing livestock.
As the Veldt Grass comes out into its seed head, many of our hills and paddocks turn a distinctive russet to dusty pink colour.
The Australian Government’s National Landcare Program funded project 'Improved knowledge and health of non wetting soils' has provided a valuable opportunity to learn more about this important part of grazing production and healthy farming systems across our District.
As land and input prices increase, this project has provided a timely opportunity to learn more about optimising grazing production from this grass so well suited to our local conditions.
.
The Veldt Grass Establishment and Seed Harvesting Fact Sheets below were compiled by surveying and interviewing local farmers about their experience of growing and managing this pasture. These Fact Sheets contain valuable local knowledge and techniques honed over many years.
