Draft Flag Flying Policy

Coorong District Council is seeking community feedback on its draft Flag Flying Policy.

At the ordinary Council meeting held on 21 November 2023, Council considered a new policy which aims to establish a consistent approach to the flying of flags on flag poles under Council’s care and control.

The flying of flags is not only a civic responsibility, but a privilege. It symbolises an enduring commitment to national values and a sense of pride within the country of Australia. The draft Flag Flying Policy has been developed in a holistic sense which encompasses:

  • Australia’s most important symbols and their significance to the existence of the local government sector;
  • The symbol of pride that we as citizens have in our country and its diversity;
  • Council’s commitment to the overarching pillars within its Community Vision Plan 2021 – 2025.

The key points of the draft Flag flying policy:

  • Identifies the number and location of flag poles under Council’s care and control.
  • Sets a standard protocol for flying flags at each location.
  • Sets protocols for when flags may be flown at half mast.
  • Sets protocols for decision making when requests are received to fly alternative flags or for the flags to be flown at half mast.

Community was invited to provide feedback with consultation will open for 6 weeks from 12 January until 26 February 2024. A report will be presented to Council in March 2024 summarising community feedback and enabling a final endorsement of the policy.
