Coorong District Council Flood Response

The River Murray experienced flooding in late 2022 and early 2023 as a result of heavy rain and flood events from interstate. Floodwater is now receding, and water levels are dropping rapidly.

Council is part of the Zone Emergency Support Team (ZEST) which connects us with all relevant agencies and neighbouring councils, ensuring timely and accurate information is received and communicated.

In the interest of public safety and the protection of Council-managed infrastructure, preemptive works were undertaken ahead of the flood peak arriving in the Coorong district in January 2023. This included removing some riverfront infrastructure, closing vulnerable public areas due to a risk to public safety, inserting hazard buoys on submerged infrastructure and relocating water extraction infrastructure at Wellington East.

Infrastructure has now been restored to its original condition (pre-flood), and public areas reopened.

The community is encouraged to keep abreast of official information which can be sourced through the State Government's website. Council will continue to share relevant information as it becomes available via this website and social media.
