Nominations are now open for the 2023 Australia Day Awards within the Coorong Council district. It’s time to celebrate and recognise our home-grown heroes!

In 2022 Australia Day events were held in the towns of Tintinara, Meningie, Coonalpyn and Tailem Bend, where deserving Coorong recipients were celebrated.

2023 Coorong district nominations are now welcome from all areas across the district.

Australia Day Award nomination categories include Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Community Event of the Year, and Community Project of the Year.

Individuals need only be nominated once to be considered for an award, and the number of nominations received per nominee bears no weight in their selection.

Selection criteria includes:

Citizen and Young Citizen of the Year: significant contribution to the community, an inspirational role model and the scope or impact of their contribution to the Coorong district.

Community Event of the Year: the quality of the event, scope of the impact of the event on the Coorong district, the event’s contribution to the community.

Community Project of the Year: quality of the project, scope of the impact the project has on the Coorong district, the project’s contribution to the community.

In 2022 it was wonderful to recognise 17 year old Lachlan Jacobs from Coonalpyn as Young Citizen of the Year for his outstanding contribution to the community. This year residents are encouraged to nominate their outstanding young achievers again and share the achievements of these special individuals.

Daphne Hastings from Meningie and Tailem Bend’s Michael Holliday were both awarded Citizen of the Year in 2022 for their long-standing commitment to their respective communities.

The Meningie parkrun and Tailem Bend’s The Life & Times of Tailem Bend History Exhibition and History Room Opening received Community Event of the Year honours, and the Tailem Topics, the Tintinara Oval & Recreation Association re-development and Meningie Area School’s Year 4/5 Letter Writing Project all received accolades as Community Projects of the Year. And the Meningie Skate Park Committee received the Mayor’s Award for their collaborative efforts in developing a community skate park at Meningie.

If you know of a community group or an individual who should have their outstanding achievements celebrated, please consider nominating them for the 2023 Australia Day Awards.

Nomination forms are available from any Council office or can be downloaded from Coorong District Council’s website: www.coorong.sa.gov.au/australiaday.

Nominations close at 5:00pm on Friday, 28 October 2022.
