Media Release

Nominations are now open for the 2024 Australia Day Awards within the Coorong Council district. It’s time to celebrate and recognise our home-grown heroes!

This year’s Australia Day events were held in the towns of Tintinara, Meningie, Sherlock and Tailem Bend, where deserving Coorong recipients were celebrated.

2024 nominations are now welcome from all areas across the district.

Australia Day Award nomination categories include Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Community Event of the Year, and Community Project of the Year.

Individuals need only be nominated once to be considered for an award, and the number of nominations received per nominee bears no weight in their selection.

Selection criteria includes:

Citizen and Young Citizen of the Year: significant contribution to the community, an inspirational role model and the scope or impact of their contribution to the Coorong district.

Community Event of the Year: the quality of the event, scope of the impact of the event on the Coorong district, the event’s contribution to the community.

Community Project of the Year: quality of the project, scope of the impact the project has on the Coorong district, the project’s contribution to the community.

This year residents are encouraged to nominate their outstanding achievers again and share the achievements of these special individuals.

Rob Lawson from Meningie, Tailem Bend’s Brian Lloyd, Tintinara’s Lisa Fatchen and Sherlock’s Roger Poole were all awarded Citizen of the Year in 2023 for their long-standing commitment to their respective communities.

The Meningie, Border Downs Tintinara, and Peake & District Football and Netball Clubs were awarded the Mayor’s Commendation, recognising the contributions these clubs made to the community and acknowledging the efforts required for the clubs to undertake recent mergers. The award also recognised the clubs’ efforts and contributions to building long term sustainability and resilience amongst our sporting clubs.

If you know of a community group or an individual who should have their outstanding achievements celebrated, please consider nominating them for the 2024 Australia Day Awards.

Nomination forms are available from any Council office or can be downloaded from Coorong District Council’s website: www.coorong.sa.gov.au/australiaday.

Nominations close at 5:00pm on Friday, 27 October 2023.
