The construction of a community skate park at the Meningie town oval has taken a step closer to completion at a meeting of the Coorong Assessment Panel held in Meningie on Thursday, 7 July 2022, when the panel granted planning consent following an extended assessment process.

Coorong District Council’s Mayor Paul Simmons was pleased with the result of the development assessment.

“With formal planning consent now granted, Council can re-engage the contractor and confirm a detailed delivery program. It is an exciting outcome and all those involved should be extremely proud of their hard work,” says Mayor Paul Simmons.

The design and construction of a new skate park facility in Meningie has been a labour of love for many Meninge residents for a number of years. The town’s youth have been committed to their pursuit for a facility that creates a family friendly space, encourages mental and physical wellbeing, and importantly attracts and retains young people and their families in the district.

The community skate park project has been a collaborative effort, with funding support from the Commonwealth Government through the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program and Coorong District Council, as well as additional funds raised by the Meningie community.

Planning consent for the skate park included a reserved matter relating to the provision of an acoustic barrier designed to shield nearby residences from noise generated from the skate park.

While the barrier has generated some debate, an independent acoustic specialist advised the assessment panel that to meet the Environmental Protection Authority’s Noise Policy Guidelines, the barrier was a necessity. The reserved matter now allows the Council to undertake some refinements to the final barrier design to soften its visual impact and incorporate landscaped earth mounding into the skate park construction.

The skate park project will now move forward, with negotiations to commence with the contractor – a company which specialises in skate park construction – to make final design adjustments and agree on a construction commencement date.

Coorong District Council will continue to keep all key stakeholders informed as the project progresses towards completion.
