Coonalpyn Community Garden celebrates fruits of its labour
Fresh food and thriving produce will be celebrated next week at the official opening of the Coonalpyn Community Garden.
Special guest Sophie Thomson (ABC Gardening Australia presenter) will officially open the garden project at the Coonalpyn Community Hub on Thursday 11 March along with garden volunteers and members of the community.
This collaborative initiative between Coorong District Council and the Coonalpyn Community Hub was made possible through the State Government’s SA Healthy Towns Challenge grant program.
Garden volunteers have been successful in establishing a sustainable community garden that will produce seasonal fruit, vegetables and herbs for the whole community to enjoy. Utilising local businesses and suppliers, five garden beds have been assembled, a rainwater tank has been installed and irrigation connected to the individual gardens and fruit trees.
The Heart Foundation also partnered on this project to provide key information that was used to create a ‘Health and Wellbeing Program’ that was run for six weeks alongside development of the community garden.
Program participants were encouraged to take a walk and have a chat to other participants or potter in the garden and then learn about heart health, health and wellbeing, healthy cooking and exercise for healthy living.
The community garden project is proving to be a successful venture and is now taking on a life of its own; a ‘Swap ‘n’ Share’ has been set up at the Coonalpyn Community Hub, where community members can bring in their own garden produce to swap and share, along with produce from the community garden.
Community members are invited to join Sophie Thomson at Coonalpyn Community Hub for the official opening of the Coonalpyn Community Garden on Thursday, 11 March 2021 at 2pm. Please contact Council to register your RSVP.
