The newly refurbished Coonalpyn & District Soldiers Memorial Swimming Pool will open to the public from Monday, 6 December for the 2021/22 swimming season.

The pool facility and amenities have undergone a facelift which will be completed just in time for the commencement of the swimming season thanks to funding received from the Federal Government.

Coorong District Council’s Mayor Paul Simmons is looking forward to the pool being well-attended during the hot summer months.

“We are delighted to open the 2021/22 pool season with a newly upgraded facility for our residents and community to enjoy”, says Mayor Paul Simmons.

Pool refurbishment and upgrades to the canteen and amenities were carried out during 2020 and 2021. $335,000 received through the Drought Communities Extension Programme enabled renovation of the 25-metre swimming pool and separate wading pool, as well as new fencing and paving plus additional storage. The pool renovations have increased the longevity of the facility so that it will continue to service the community well into the future.

$190,000 received through the Local Roads & Community Infrastructure Program together with a $145,000 Council contribution have provided opportunity to also update the pool building and amenities; the facilities are now more user friendly and provide welcoming spaces for pool users.

Member for Barker Tony Pasin said the Federal Government funding totalling $525,000 was an important investment in the Coonalpyn community and it was great to see the upgrades completed in time for summer 2021.

“These upgrades have transformed a tired facility into one in which people of all ages and ability can swim in safety, just in time for summer,” Mr Pasin said.

“I am pleased to partner with the Coorong District Council to ensure projects like the Coonalpyn & District Soldiers Memorial Swimming Pool redevelopment are undertaken to support jobs in the local community, and importantly make Coonalpyn an even better place to live, work and raise family.”

Mayor Paul Simmons added, “The investment of Commonwealth funds into regional community infrastructure projects has been welcomed by our rural communities.”

“Projects like the upgrade of the Coonalpyn pool would simply not have been possible – or taken far longer to undertake – if not for Commonwealth funding support.”

Ably assisted by a team of dedicated pool attendants and volunteers, the Coonalpyn pool will be open daily through December to March (subject to weather conditions) from 4 – 6pm on weekdays and 2 – 6pm during school holidays, public holidays and on weekends. Season passes are available and can be purchased from any Council office (in person or over the phone) or the Coonalpyn pool.

For those parents and kids who are interested in a holiday swim program, the Coonalpyn pool will be hosting Royal Lifesaving SA’s Holiday Swim program in the first week of January (3 – 7 January 2022). Bookings are now open and can be made online (www.royallifesavingsa.com.au/holidayswim) or by calling 8210 4500.

A combined celebration of the pool redevelopment and Australia Day is planned for 26 January 2022 from 2pm onwards at the Coonalpyn pool; the day’s festivities will include free entry, complimentary barbecue, and celebrating local Australia Day Award winners. All community members are welcome to attend.
