Coorong and Tatiara Councils Welcome Critical Funding to Boost Bushfire Resilience
The Coorong and Tatiara District Councils have welcomed funding of $122,000 through the Australian Government’s Disaster Resilience Fund round three to secure firefighting water for bushfire resilience across the Coorong and Tatiara areas.
Recent fires in the 15,312 square kilometre region have highlighted the urgent need for accessible firefighting water.
The $259,000 project will enable a comprehensive survey of existing public and private water infrastructure, including tanks and bores, and ensure they are equipped with Country Fire Service-compatible fittings for rapid access during emergencies.
The project will also integrate this information into the Broadcast Alert Response Turnout (BART) Emergency Service Platform, improving coordination and response times.
Coorong District Council’s acting Mayor Cr. Jonathan Pietzsch and Tatiara District Council’s Mayor Liz Goossens have both welcomed the announcement.
“Grants like this are critical to strengthening our region’s preparedness, enabling a more efficient approach to firefighting in an environment where time is critical” says Cr. Pietzsch.
“By improving access to firefighting water and mapping resources, we are taking proactive steps to protect lives, property, and the environment."
“We welcome any funding that strengthens fire prevention, especially as we approach the new fire season and work to ensure the best possible facilities. The partnership between Coorong District Council and Tatiara District Council is vital to improving fire prevention and strengthening our preparedness,” says Mayor Liz Goossens.
An important partnership in delivering this project is the Country Fire Service (CFS), whose support and expertise will ensure the infrastructure upgrades meet operational requirements and deliver maximum benefit to local communities.
The councils have thanked their partners and stakeholders for supporting this important initiative and look forward to delivering improved bushfire preparedness for the region.
