Residents across the Coorong region will have greater access to digital skills training and technology support thanks to a $30,000 grant awarded to Coorong Libraries through the expansion of the Being Digital program.

The funding will support ‘Coorong Connects: Tech Made Simple’, a 12-month digital literacy program helping residents build confidence using technology, safely access online services and stay connected.

The free program is being delivered across all Coorong Libraries, including Coomandook, Coonalpyn, Meningie, Tailem Bend and Tintinara libraries, over the next 12 months.

The funding forms part of a broader $250,000 Adult Community Education grant under the South Australian Government's Foundation Skills program, jointly funded by the Australian and South Australian Governments and delivered in partnership with the Libraries Board of South Australia, Libraries SA and Telstra.

With a Digital Inclusion Index score of 64.3, the Coorong District Council area experiences significant digital disadvantage. Limited digital access, affordability and skills can create barriers to accessing essential services, education, employment and social connections.

Coorong District Council’s Acting Mayor Cr. Jonathan Pietzsch said the funding would provide valuable practical support for local residents.

“This $30,000 investment in our libraries will make a real difference, particularly for older community members who may feel overwhelmed by rapidly changing technology,” Cr. Pietzsch said.

“From accessing government services and managing finances to booking appointments and connecting with family, digital skills are increasingly important in everyday life.

“This program will provide practical support in trusted, familiar community settings and help strengthen digital inclusion across our district.”

Participants will have access to practical workshops and free one-on-one support covering smartphones, tablets and computers, device setup, Wi-Fi, online safety, government services, internet banking, email, social media and video calling.

The Council’s Senior Community & Tourism Development Officer Kellie Jaensch said the program was focused on building confidence and reducing barriers.

“Digital literacy is now an essential life skill, yet many people in rural communities still lack confidence using technology independently,” Ms Jaensch said.

“Whether it’s learning how to avoid online scams, access MyGov, use internet banking, connect with family through video calls or understand a new device, Coorong Connects will provide practical, accessible support close to home.”

The Council acknowledges support from the Australian and South Australian Governments, the Libraries Board of South Australia, Libraries SA, Telstra and the Adult Community Education Foundation Skills Program.
