NAIDOC Week events will be celebrated across the Coorong District Council this October following a postponement earlier this year.

Local communities across the Coorong District Council are invited to participate in the 2022 NAIDOC Week celebrations being held from 24 – 28 October 2022.

Each year NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC Week is celebrated not only by First Nations people, but by Australians from all walks of life.

“NAIDOC Week is a great opportunity for our community to engage in First Nations culture and participate in a range of activities in support of our local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities,” says Coorong District Council Mayor Paul Simmons.

The NAIDOC 2022 theme – Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! – calls for all Australians to continue to work towards and support systemic change, in pursuit of securing institutional, structural, collaborative and cooperative reforms.

NAIDOC 2022 invites the nation to embrace First Nations’ cultural knowledge and understanding of Country as part of Australia's national heritage and equally respect the culture and values of Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islanders, as they do the cultures and values of all Australians.

Coorong District Council will host three (3) events across the district that will include flag raising ceremonies, performances of cultural song and dance, cultural art and craft workshops along with a community barbecue or morning tea.

Generous community support and sponsorship received from Bank SA, Moorundi Health Services, Aboriginal Health, Riverland Mallee Coorong Local Health Network the Riverland Mallee Coorong Local Health Network, have made these events possible.
