Coorong NAIDOC Week to be Celebrated in September 2021
Local communities across the Coorong District Council are invited to participate in the 2021 NAIDOC Week celebrations now being held from 20 – 24 September 2021.
Following the postponement of 2021 NAIDOC Week celebrations in July this year, Coorong District Council has worked with its sponsors and community to deliver the planned events and activities in September 2021.
Each year NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC Week is celebrated not only in First Nations people, but by Australians from all walks of life.
“NAIDOC Week is a great opportunity for our community to engage in First Nations culture and participate in a range of activities in support of our local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities,” says Coorong District Council Mayor Paul Simmons.
The NAIDOC 2021 theme – Heal Country! – calls for all of us to continue to seek greater protections for our lands, our waters, our sacred sites and our cultural heritage from exploitation, desecration, and destruction.
NAIDOC 2021 invites the nation to embrace First Nations’ cultural knowledge and understanding of Country as part of Australia's national heritage and equally respect the culture and values of Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islanders, as they do the cultures and values of all Australians.
Coorong District Council will be hosting three (3) events across the district that will include flag raising ceremonies, performances of cultural song and dance, community barbecue, family fun day, and a showing of this year’s Nunga Screen.
In what will be a first for Coorong District Council, “Nunga Screen” will be showcased at the Tailem Bend Town Hall. Formerly known as Black Screen, Nunga Screen features an entertaining program of independent short films for all ages from emerging to the more established film-makers.
Inspiring documentaries, compelling tales, dramas, animation, contemporary to traditional storytelling – this film event is dedicated to bringing communities together to share in culture and engage in conversation with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Generous community support and sponsorship received from Bank SA, Moorundi Health Services, the Riverland Mallee Coorong Local Health Network, Raukkan Community Council have made these events possible.
