Growing Coorong - Planning for the Future

Media Release

Coorong District Council is inviting the community to give input into the development of a Growth Strategy which will guide the Council in attracting, sustaining and managing residential and commercial growth throughout the district.

In early May 2022 Council will be providing opportunities for community feedback through public meetings, surveys and online submissions.

Coorong District Council’s Mayor Paul Simmons welcomes the development of a plan that will focus on the future growth of the district.

“A Growth Strategy really asks us all to imagine our towns and districts in the future,” says Mayor Simmons.

“Where will the towns’ residential and commercial areas have grown, what might our sports and recreational areas look like, what we would need to support high growth – knowing that history tells us the best prepared are those communities who have a plan that remains fresh and relevant.”

The Coorong Growth Strategy will describe the Council’s plan for how the region should grow in a way that retains its unique attributes and increases attraction for people and businesses, whilst managing growth sustainably.

The Growth Strategy will plan for the near future but will also extend out as far as the next 25 years. This vision will build on the work undertaken in the Community Vision Plan and will guide the Council’s decision making and investment. The policies and strategies in the Growth Strategy seek to build on the strengths of the region, such as its idyllic landscapes, strength in primary production and other key industries.

Whilst taking a whole-of-region approach, the Growth Strategy will pay particular attention to the Tailem Bend, Meningie, Wellington East, Tintinara and Coonalpyn townships.

Input is being sought from members of the public to ensure that the Growth Strategy reflects the vision of the community as identified in the Council’s Community Vision Plan.

Community members are encouraged to come along to an upcoming community drop-in session and have their say about how the district will grow over the next 25 years.

Further details are available online (www.coorong.sa.gov.au/growingcoorong), including access to a business survey and listening post information.
