It’s time to shine a spotlight on the incredible people and projects that make the Coorong district such a special place to live. Nominations are now open for the 2026 Citizen of the Year Awards — and we want to hear about your local legends!

Whether it’s a tireless volunteer, a passionate young leader, a standout community event, or a project that’s made a real difference — now’s your chance to celebrate those who go above and beyond.

Award categories include Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Community Event of the Year and Community Project of the Year.

Nominees only need to be put forward once to be considered, and the number of nominations doesn’t influence the final decision — so even one heartfelt nomination can make all the difference. Selection criteria:

Citizen and Young Citizen of the Year: Recognising individuals who’ve made a significant impact, inspired others, and contributed meaningfully to the Coorong community.

Community Event of the Year: Celebrating the most outstanding event that brought people together and created lasting memories.

Community Project of the Year: Honouring initiatives that have made a positive and lasting difference in our district.

Residents are encouraged to nominate their outstanding achievers and share the successes of these special individuals.

Last year’s winners included Citizens of the Year Raelene Varga (Tailem Bend), Steve Starling and Jeff Wright (Meningie), and Lou Sanders (Narrung) – all recognised for their incredible dedication to their communities.

The Tailem Bend Community Centre wowed us with their magical Enchanted Encounter, earning the Community Project of the Year. And the Meningie and Districts Memorial Hospital was awarded Community Event of the Year for their unforgettable 55th Anniversary Celebrations.

Know someone amazing? Nominate them today! Let’s celebrate the heart and soul of the Coorong — the people and projects that make our region thrive.

Nomination forms are available from any Council office or can be downloaded from Coorong District Council’s website: www.coorong.sa.gov.au/citizenoftheyearawards

Nominations close at 5:00pm on Friday, 24 October 2025.
