The region’s best kept secret, Pangarinda Botanic Garden will be celebrating 30 years of native flora conservation and preservation efforts this Sunday, 28 May 2023, at Wellington East.

Coorong District Council’s Mayor Paul Simmons is looking forward to this increasingly popular attraction being celebrated.

“Pangarinda Botanic Garden is fast becoming an attractive destination – we have noted an increase in visitor numbers from locals and visitors to the region, as well as a growing interest from bus companies and touring groups,” says Mayor Paul Simmons.

“Perfectly located just over an hour’s drive from Adelaide, Pangarinda Botanic Garden is the perfect place to visit, and a great inclusion on a day’s outing,” says Mayor Simmons.

Established in 1993, Coorong District Council Volunteers along with the support of community groups, local businesses and individuals have worked together to remediate the 30-hectare site, which was once infested with weeks and sand erosion, with only a few remnant patches of native trees.

By 2010 a staggering 12 hectares had been planted out, and today that has been extended to 25 hectares.

Pangarinda Botanic Garden is unique due to its extensive collection of endangered species which are on display and purposely planted out in natural vegetations associations to give visitors a real connection to the environmental display.

With only five Botanic Gardens in South Australia, Pangarinda prides itself on being managed by dedicated volunteers and employing environmental and sustainable practices, including rainfall dependencies.

“The celebrations coincide with National Botanic Garden Day which recognises the contributions that Gardens such as Pangarinda make to the conservation of Australian flora for future generations to enjoy,” says Pangarinda Botanic Garden Committee’s Chairperson Julie Barrie.

“We look forward to welcoming new and old visitors back Pangarinda, to help celebrate this achievement,” says Julie Barrie.

The celebration will take place on Sunday, 28 May 2023 between 10am and 4pm. Members of the community are encouraged to come along and enjoy the beautiful gardens. Volunteers will be conducting guided walks throughout the day, and lunch and refreshments will also be available.
