Veldt Grass Management Resources brings together farmer experience and new work driving production potential
Veldt Grass pastures are a readily recognisable part of the Coorong, Tatiara and Southern Mallee landscape. This pasture is well suited to our rainfall, climate and sandy soils. Over many years Veldt Grass pastures have stabilised our sandy soils and provided a hardy feed base for grazing livestock. As the Veldt Grass comes out into seed head, many of our hills and paddocks turn a distinctive russet to dusty pink colour.
Support from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program has funded a project providing a valuable opportunity to learn more about this important part of grazing production systems across our District. As land and input prices increase, this project provides a timely opportunity to learn more about optimising grazing production from this grass so well suited to our local conditions.
The Coorong Tatiara Local Action Plan is pleased to introduce a suite of new online resources highlighting the benefits of Veldt Grass. This information aims to support land managers by bringing together new, tried and tested information about establishment, harvest, and production potential of Veldt Grass in grazing systems through optimising pasture management and understanding of feed nutrition.
Coorong District Council Mayor Paul Simmons said “This project has brought together new ideas and the knowledge honed over generations by Upper South East and Southern Mallee farmers experienced in the establishment, harvest and management of Veldt Grass on our sandier soils types”.
"By promoting the benefits of Veldt Grass and providing resources to support its effective utilisation, we aim to support farmers to enhance their pasture management practices and optimise livestock production."
Accessible through the Coorong District Council web page www.coorong.sa.gov.au, the Veldt Grass Resource Page provides valuable insights, research findings, and practical tips on utilising Veldt Grass as a sustainable and productive pasture grass. Visitors to the page will find information on the nutritional benefits of Veldt Grass, its adaptability to local conditions, and best practices for integrating it into grazing systems.
