Coorong District Council is seeking community feedback on the proposed sale of surplus land located in Tailem Bend.

At the ordinary Council meeting held on 21 November 2023, Council considered options around the disposal of surplus land located at Tenth Street, Tailem Bend. Consisting of 10,000 square metres, the land was previously home to the Tailem Bend Tennis Club who have recently relocated to Jaensch Park, and is now considered vacant land and surplus to the Council’s needs.

Zoned for residential use, the identified land is in a prime location for housing development, and will assist in creating available land for future homes and welcoming population growth.

In order to dispose of Council-owned land, community engagement is required to assist in gauging the community’s thoughts and to guide the Council in making a final decision.

An Options Paper has been developed to assist both the community and Council to understand the opportunities arising from the proposed sale of land.

These opportunities include selling the block as it is, dividing the block and selling allotments, working with a not-for-profit housing developer to develop affordable housing or retaining the land as open recreation space for community use.

In addressing housing affordability and availability, Council resolved that its current preferred option is a mix of selling a portion of the land on the open market and retaining a portion for affordable housing. In doing so, it supports current funding opportunities available to support project planning and preparation activity for an affordable housing development in Tailem Bend.

Feedback is now invited from the community, and consultation will remain open until 5pm on Friday, 5 January 2024. A further report will be presented to Council in February 2024 summarising community feedback and enabling a final decision to progress disposal of the surplus land.

Feedback is welcomed through the following methods:
