Flood response works underway in the Coorong

Public Notice

In the interest of public safety and the protection of Council managed infrastructure, preemptive works will commence in advance of the River Murray flood peak arriving in the Coorong district in late December.

Works to remove some river front infrastructure has commenced and some vulnerable public areas will be closed from 19 December 2022 as there is a heightened risk to public safety due to submerged objects and other hazards no longer visible under the water.

In particular:

  • Floating Pontoons at Dickson Reserve, Tailem Bend and the Wellington East Reserve will have their gangways removed
  • The concrete walkway at Dickson Reserve will be cordoned off to all public access
  • Low level jetties will have hazard buoys installed to signify potential hazards
  • Relocation of water extraction infrastructure at Wellington East

These works are being undertaken in advance of the Christmas and New Year period based on the predicted flows that are forecast to arrive in our region during this time. Council has further interventions planned and ready to be implemented should there be an increase in the predicted flow rates following the Christmas and New Year holiday period.

Coorong District Council will continue to monitor the flood response upstream and make decisions based on risk determined through evidence provided by Emergency Services and State Government Departments.

The community is strongly encouraged to keep abreast of official information which can be sourced through the State Government's website.
